Following an architectural selection process launched at the end of 2024 that attracted strong international interest, three of the airport’s four areas have now been definitively awarded to Luis Vidal + Architects | ZJA Architects & Engineers. The commission includes the design of Schiphol Plaza, including the lounges, the airport piers, gates and flow areas, as well as the landside passenger areas and parking facilities. For the landscape design, DELVA Landscape Architecture + Urbanism will join Luis Vidal + Architects | ZJA Architects & Engineers.

David Ávila, Associate Director at luis vidal + architects, has participated in the latest edition of the Eco Forum by Grupo Via, which has focused on sustainability within the field of construction.

At this event, David has presented two os the Practice’s most relevant case studies: Loyola University in Andalusia, and the New Colón Towers in Madrid, both noted for their high energy standards. This was followed by a round table discussion in which all participants gave their perspective on how best to address the environmental challenges of today’s construction industry.

After a decade of new and extraordinary works all over the world, luis vidal + architects releases a new book: Expect the Unexpected.

Philip Jodidio, renowned architecture writer, gives voice to this monograph that covers the Practice’s work over the last 10 years, accompanied by some spectacular images by Ema Peters, among other prominent photographers. A book to discover some of the best airport, hospital and office projects of one of the leading international architecture practices.

Luis Vidal has spoken at the New York City Architectural Biennial as part of this year’s theme: Architectural Intersections. We are very excited to announce our participation as panelists at the Autodesk University 2024 Design and Make Conference, which took place in San Diego, California.

Our colleague Fernando Bello, BIM Manager, spoke about our evolution through BIM implementation and about the use of Autodesk’s ACC platform at luis vidal + architects. As pioneers in this methodology for over 15 years, these tools are a fundamental part of our DNA.

After a few months of negotiating, Garrigues and Mutua Madrileña have reached an agreement for the prestigious law firm as sole tenant of the New Colón Towers.

The renovation, by luis vidal + architects, has turned the iconic building into “the most modern building in Madrid”. A building that, thanks to the active and passive measures implemented to reduce energy consumption and with its self-generation systems, will be the first nearly zero energy office building (nZEB) inSpain.

Because of this, the square meter has risen its value to the point of becoming one of the most expensive one in the city centre.

We are witnessing an exciting development in the world of aviation and tourism that goes in line with the recent opening of Terminal E in Boston, an insfrastructure that enhances the travel experience for its passengers. The prominent design magazine dezeen has written about Boston Logan’s new Terminal E, highlighting, among many other features, the brand new Boston Red color that turns it into an icon for the city.

Terminal E sets a new standard in airport design, proving that form and function can coexist beautifully. The newly redesigned terminal is being defined as awe-inspiring, a bold blend of elegance and practicality that elevates the travel experience.

The new Terminal E at Boston Logan International Airport has once again been featured in a prestigious international medium. This time, Arquitectura Viva – one of the most impactful Spanish architectural magazines – has been the one to publish an article on the terminal.

Architectural Record, one of the most renowned industry magazines, has published a case study on Boston Logan’s new Terminal E. Under the title “Paint the Town Red”, and within the Transportation & Infrastructure section – with a picture of the project on its front page – the piece praises once again into the passenger-oriented design and its unique Boston Red color.

The report, on the cover of “Papel” supplement of the Spanish newspaper, highlights Luis Vidal’s vision of the future its “humanization”, highlighting the freedom it grants the user during their time at the terminal, as well as the use of elements such as color as to improve the traveler’s experience.

The Wall Street Journal has chosen Boston Logan’s New Terminal E as one of the best pieces of architecture in 2023: “There is no question that it stands among the exceptional buildings of 2023” claims the newspaper, which reaches over 3.4 million readers everyday.

The Boston Globe, the most important physical and digital media of the capital of Massachusetts, has once again complimented Logan’s new Terminal E, where luis vidal + architects has played a key role as Design Architects.

On the occasion of its inauguration, the newspaper talks about an enhanced user experience, and the comfort and enthusiasm that the terminal brings to the traveler, emphasizing the striking red color – and not just any red, the Boston Red shade is a prismatic color created ad hoc by Luis Vidal in the Swiss laboratories Monopol for this project – that covers its roof.

Thus, the modernization of Terminal E of one of the most important airports in the country, an intervention by luis vidal + architects and AECOM, begins to reap success just a few days days after its grand opening.

The AIA (American Institute of Architects) just celebrated their international edition AIA MX. As part of the Memories and Visions conference, Luis Vidal has been awarded the highest national recognition: the FCARM medal for his long and outstanding professional career.

To honor this, Vidal stood in front of an audience of over one thousand people – a mix of architects, students, and some of Mexico’s most recognizable personalities – to give his most personal presentation to date. In Reflections, the architect reviews his work and life in an inspiring way, mentioning the pillars of his personal career, including his family and his mentor, Richard Rogers, as well as some of the most renowned projects by luis vidal + architects.

Issue 118 of AV Proyectos features a graphic piece on luis vidal + architects’ project for the new Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor Station. A collaborative proposal together with RSHP, Fhecor, Meta Engineering and Carlos G. Casado.

Loyola University has inaugurated the new Phase 2 building on its Seville campus, designed by luis vidal + architects. The opening, coinciding with the beginning of the new school year, took place during an emotional ceremony in which everyone also bid farewell to Chancellor Gabriel Pérez Alcalá, who is retiring after more than 11 years as the head of the institution, and almost four decades serving it.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of University, Research, and Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía, Lorena Garrido Serrano, who cut the ribbon with Luis Vidal by her side, as well as the mayor of Dos Hermanas, Francisco Rodríguez García; the sub-delegate of the Spanish Government in Seville, Isabel Mayo; and the chancellors of Deusto and Comillas Universities, Juan José Etxeberría and Enrique Sanz, respectively.

This reaffirms the close bond and deep trust that exists between the university and the renowned international architecture practice, which has once again brought the most sustainable and innovative design principles to Loyola’s classrooms.

 

Luis Vidal has been invited as a guest speaker to one of the main conferences of the real estate sector: The EPRA Conference 2023. Based in London, the edition was titled “The Future of Cities“. Attended by numerous participants from the leading companies in the European real estate scene, it featured the presentations of Mark Allan – CEO of Landsec Group – and Luis Vidal.

Vidal’s presentation, “Sustainability Beyond Borders“, inspired the attendees, some of the biggest stakeholders in the sector, to reflect on the responsible development of our cities.

Matta Sur has won yet another award, growing the list to more than ten, and counting.

The latest of these recognitions is the DNA Paris Design Award, which has named the Chilean project as the winner of the Public Architecture/Renovation category, acknowledging the delicate balance established between the historical and the contemporary parts of the complex.

A prestigious award the team could not be prouder of, one that is an indication of what is sure to come for the Matta Sur Community Center + CESFAM.

The City of Pensacola and Pensacola International Airport (PNS) have selected EXP/luis vidal team to deliver the design of the airport’s $70+ million Passenger Terminal Expansion Project. The design by EXP and luis vidal + architects will incorporate essential infrastructure improvements to fulfill Pensacola International Airport’s Master Plan. This expansion project will bolster PNS’s short and long-term goals of serving as a world-class gateway and driver of economic growth throughout the region.  

PNS has accommodated record-breaking passenger traffic since 2019. With accelerated expansion and growth plans, the project will strengthen the airport’s ability to meet current and future infrastructure and capacity demands. The Passenger Terminal Expansion Project includes a new concourse with enhanced connections to the existing terminal building, expanded passenger security screening checkpoints and new boarding bridges. As the lead designer, EXP will provide oversight for all architectural, engineering and design-related services to ensure the successful delivery of the project from concept to completion.

The new International Terminal of Arturo Merino Benítez Airport, in Santiago de Chile, has once again been featured in a medium specialized in architecture.

This time, it is Proarquitectura (a leading monthly physical and digital publication in the Spanish market) that has published an article about the terminal building, which opened its doors in February 2022.

The piece highlights qualities such as natural lighting, signage that favors intuitive wayfinding for users, and the environmental sustainability of the project. All of which are already hallmark qualities of luis vidal + architects in each of their proposals.

Sara Moreno, BIM director at luis vidal + architects, took part in the round table “Construction 4.0: Integrating New Technologies”, in the VI edition of Rebuild on March 30th.

Moreno represented the studio in the country’s largest fair for industrialized construction, sustainability and digitalization, highlighting the vision and values that constitute luis vidal + architects. In this conversation, some of the aspects of adaptation to new technologies were discussed, showing methods for implementing innovative systems, and sharing experiences and practical cases in the field of design and construction. All of this within a climate where the greatest goal is the search for optimization and quality through the most cutting-edge tools and continuous training.

The experts’ unanimous conclusion determined that change must always be faced with confidence in future revenues. A vision that Sara reaffirmed, voicing once again the studio’s commitment to the latest technologies; a studio that has integrated BIM methodology since the beginning, and uses it to work in perfect balance with a multinational and multidisciplinary team.

Óscar Torrejón was the highlight of Design Week RD with his “Vision Talk” on international experience in architectural design. The relevance of the user, global knowledge and hybrid buildings were the pillars of his inspiring conference in which a large audience applauded the robust values and the quality of luis vidal + architects’ projects.

Crews are installing the structural ‘trees’ which are part of the unique design for the new terminal being constructed at Pittsburgh International Airport. As part of the vision design created by luis vidal + architects, the trees symbolize the natural beauty of the Pittsburgh region. In his vision, the new airport terminal design will mirror the blooming strength (Nature), the spirit of prosperity (Technology) and the vibrant vitality (Community) of the Pittsburgh region = NaTeCo.

The new project is a design partnership by Gensler + HDR in association with luis vidal + architects.

On January 27th, Marcos Velasco, Design Director at luis vidal + architects, presented the Community Center + Family Health Center (CESFAM) Matta Sur in the conference, a project born out of the responsibility to return a building with historical and emotional significance back to the city. This project is the perfect example of the healthcare model that Italy is willing to implement, in order to offer a closer and more personal health service, aimed at enabling the community to benefit from synergies between hospital and social care facilities.

The challenge was restoring the heritage building and designing a new building harmoniously integrated into the whole. “The approach consisted of a careful analysis of the original building, combined with a design based on materiality, spatiality, functionality, rhythm, sustainability, and a study of the façades and light. The original architectural and aesthetic value of the building was recovered, in addition to establishing a dialogue between the historic building and the new one, creating an iconic space in the city where social gathering, clinical care, health education and the promotion of prevention merge,” states Marcos Velasco.

The newspaper La Tercera has summoned 7 experts to offer their opinion on the remodelling of the main axis of the capital. The project will consist of a 24-kilometre metropolitan bicycle lane, the remodelling of “Nudo Pajaritos” and Plaza Italia, in addition to the recovery of public space, which includes the restoration of facades around Alameda, as well as the expansion of green areas and the implementation of more security cameras.

luis vidal + architects won second place in the competition organized by the Regional Government in 2015 and in this article maintains that this modernization should embody a broad vision of the future where public spaces participate and are actors in a profound transformation that serves as a reference model for other cities and becomes the backbone of local identity.

Mercado magazine, a leading publication in the Dominican Republic, has selected luis vidal + architects as one of the most important firms in the country. They published this honor in a luxurious book format issue that has been presented to numerous media in an event in which the partner of the firm, Óscar Torrejón, was among the main guests.

A sustainable airport of the future must be safe, recognizable, resourceful, sleek, dynamic and forward-thinking. Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal modernization project is the perfect example, designed by luis vidal + architects in association with Gensler and HDR.

The new terminal recycles or reuses at least three-quarters of construction waste, including concrete from current airfield ramps, which will be reused for new roads. Moreover, it is the first airport to be independently powered by a microgrid, featuring thousands of solar panels and five natural gas generators fuelled by onsite wells, capable of creating over 20 megawatts of electricity.

Andoni Arrizabalaga, Architect and Associate Director of Innovation and Technology at luis vidal + architects, presents this pioneering project at the fair that brings together the most innovative companies, administrations, and organizations to move toward the cities of the future.

The vertiports infrastructure has been designed for bluenest® by international company Globalvia, recognized as the Best Mobility Proposal in the Premios Ciudad 2022 of Open House Madrid.

This innovative project consists of a final approach and take-off platform (FATO) destined for the landing and take-off of drones that will facilitate urban mobility and merchandise delivery. The design of the vertiport adopts the shape of a curved ring with two contact points on the ground, which curves these same two points upwards to the other extreme. This way, the low-level releases and creates space value for the community. In the same way, its flexible design allows its implementation on different scales and points in the city.

luis vidal + architects proposes this innovative alternative with a firm environmental and social commitment, which seeks to solve the current mobility problems.

Óscar Torrejón, partner and CEO of luis vidal + architects, is responsible for the urban design of the project. As a speaker at the event, he underlined that the urban complex was born from the vision of providing comfortable housing within a safe environment that also provides families with a good connection to work, recreation, education and urban services.

“Arrecifes del Sol is a well-planned urbanistic place for the well-being of its inhabitants, where they will be able to enjoy spacious areas in harmony with the environment, as well as sports spaces and commercial stores, among other facilities.” states Óscar Torrejón.

The event took place at the JW Marriot Hotel in Santo Domingo and was attended by business partners, special guests, managers and executives of the real estate construction company CBS Developments.

Open House Madrid has recognized the potential of this pioneering project, chosen Best Mobility Proposal in the City Awards 2022.

luis vidal + architects has developed an innovative project: ‘Vertiports’. This concept refers to the landing and take-off space for drones, for delivering goods and transporting people.

The project has been developed for bluenest®, by the international company Globalvia. Its flexible design would allow its implementation at various scales and in different parts of the city.

The award was collected by the luis vidal + architects team and by Fernando Vallejo, Innovation and Systems Director of Globalvia and Managing Director of Openvia, during the awards dinner held on Tuesday, September 27.

Luis Vidal and Óscar Torrejón, partners at luis vidal + architects, appear on the front cover of Soy Caribe Premium magazine’s special edition covering FITUR. This issue brings together the key players in the growing relationship between the Dominican Republic and Spain, recognising the studio as a strong piece in this connection thanks to the work on Dominican soil, such as Cibao International Airport, PETOT Samaná and Patio Embajada.

The Community Center + CESFAM Matta Sur has received the Aporte Urbano Award of Chile, the most important architecture award in the country, and a great public recognition for our studio.

The award is organized jointly by the Chilean Chamber of Construction, the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism, the National Council for Urban Development (CNDU), the College of Architects, the Association of Architectural Offices (AOA) and the Association of Real Estate Developers (ADI).

We have just inaugurated the expansion of the Cibao International Airport in the Dominican Republic, a pioneering project for the Caribbean region, at the same level as some of the most ambitious international airport projects.

Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, led the act, breaking ground and calling the intervention “important” and “necessary” for the prosperous development of the northern region of the country. By his side, Óscar Torrejón (CEO and partner of luis vidal + architects), presented the design and talked about the details of this expansion.

The intervention, requiring an investment of 300 million dollars, will provide the airport with more space for aircraft  parking and expand the existing runway. It will improve the overall traveler experience whitin the terminal, allowing for double the number of passengers that currently cross the threshold to the Caribbean region every year. All of this, while manifesting the sustainable attitude that characterizes each of our designs.

With this project, Santiago de los Caballeros joins the list of cities in which luis vidal + architects leads the airport sector, alongside other urban areas such as Boston, Pittsburgh and Dallas.
