This ambitious project includes the development of a cultural, educational, and business hub in Antofagasta in northern Chile. Creating a large campus for the Catholic University of the North (UCN), in co-existance with related companies in the mining sector, where these companies could improve their R&D&i with the collaboration of the various university faculties.
To finance all this development, we proposed a residential area (70,000 m2) associated with the existing Regional Regulatory Plan for Antofagasta, a commercial development (10,000 m2), a business area (9,000 m2), with spaces for R&D&i laboratories (4,000 m2) and a sports complex (35,000 m2).
All this development is in the same space where the UCN planned the future growth of its campus, but with an approach that did not take into account the topography of the land or the presence of the ruins.
We designed a terraced urban park that compensates for the uneven terrain and makes up for the lack of open spaces in the city, with an area for sports, leisure, and culture.
At the site of the Ruins of Huanchaca Foundation, this program operates autonomously to carry out the rest of the master plan. The program proposed by the competition is completed with an auditorium, a public square with commercial space on top and behind the ruins, without interfering with the visual perception of the national monument.
