Castellana 77 receives a German Design Award

A symbol of Madrid's urban and economic regeneration and at the forefront of sustainability, Castellana 77 has just received a German Design Award 2019 in Frankfurt, for its innovative character and originality. This prize recognises the ability of the international practice luis vidal + architects to transform a once decaying building into the real estate gem of AZCA.

The building has achieved a Special Mention in the Architecture category for the graphic structure of its façade, which, formed by thousands of slats, reaches dynamically upwards. “Enhanced by LED lighting, is extremely eye- catching and gives the building an iconic appearance”, the organization said when awarding the prize to this construction, belonging to GMP group.

Located in the financial heart of Madrid and beating to the hectic pace of the city, this emblematic building has undergone an outstanding regeneration and has achieved a surprising “new skin”, set to become a design reference. The architectural proposal of the façade, as it incorporates slats that serve as protection from direct sunlight, is not only visually striking but also energy efficient and sustainable.

The transformation carried out by luis vidal + architects has turned this building, with its distinctive and unique elements, into a flagship of GMP Group and a landmark in the city. Hidden behind a row of prominent buildings and withheld from the eyes of the citizens for more than four decades, Castellana 77 has managed to participate again in the urban dialogue thanks to these works, which have turned the invisible into visible.

Regarding its structure, the new façade allows to tame sunlight and to take advantage of it, in order to create an image of strong identity both day and night. After a deep analysis of sunlight and shading, the slats emerged as pragmatic elements, each having a specific curvature and backlight.

In order to achieve all these objectives, we chose ETFE (Ethyleneo-TetraFluorineEthyleneo) to develop a pioneering façade solution. Highly resistant to corrosion, stress and temperature changes, it lets sunlight in, reduces the heat build-up and makes the application of backlighting possible.

Designed with environmental responsibility in mind, the building holds Gold LEED certification in the Core & Shell category awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), one of the most prestigious international certifications recognizing the sustainable behaviour of buildings.

Likewise, Castellana 77 has already received the "Best Office Architecture from Spain" prize in the European Property Awards 2017 and it was a finalist for the Architizer A+Awards 2018 in the "Offices with more than 16 floors" category.

In short, this project is a faithful reflection of our practice’s DNA: economic, social and environmental responsibility. Guided by these three principles, our firm transforms each design into a legacy and it has created a sustainable and aesthetically bold building that catches the eye and leaves a mark.
