The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design has announced that luis vidal + architects has won a 2016 Green GOOD DESIGN™ Award for Heathrow Terminal T2, The “Queen’s terminal”.
This new award joins a list of 25 prizes given to Heathrow Terminal T2 since it opened in 2014. Heathrow T2 has become a landmark building in terms of its energy efficiency, being the first airport in the world to obtain the BREEAM Excellent rating, thanks to a system designed to reduce CO2 emissions by 40%. Twenty million passengers, more than double the population of London, will pass through the terminal annually. The main feature of this new terminal is that it is designed for the passenger with the aim of contributing to the experience of flying so that this can once again become pleasant, in a space tailored to your needs, thanks to the application of a new combination of values such as the presence of natural light promoting intuitive orientation of the passenger, or the special color treatment, texture or acoustics. Since its recent opening, Terminal 2 has been recognized as the best airport Worldwide in the International Air transport Awards (ATW) 2015, The Best Public Building of the World 2014-2015 and the Best International Architecture by the Chicago Athenaeum in 2015, adding to a list of twenty-five awards.
